Pune-Lavasa Industrial Visit by MCA Department - MEFGI

Recently MCA department organized an Industrial Visit for Pune and Lavasa during Janmashtami Holidays. The schedule of Industrial Visit was from 01-Sep-2015 to 06-Sep-2015. Visit included mainly CDAC-Pune (University Campus) Centre, STPI – Pune and Lavasa. Following are the details of various places visited during Industrial Visit.

1) CDAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) PUNE

As we all are aware that CDAC is the premier R&D organization of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), Ministry of Communications & Information Technology (MCIT) for carrying out R&D in IT, Electronics and associated areas. Apart from this CDAC is well known for its manufacturing of PARAM Super Computer Series.

While visiting CDAC Pune (University Campus) centre, students were informed about the whole series of Param Super Computer as follows:

  • Param 8000
  • Param 9000
  • Param 10000
  • Param Padma
  • Param Yuva / Param Yuva - I
  • Param Yuva – II

After this students were given details about how Param Yuva-II clusters work in order to give better services to the society. Students were informed following points regarding Param Yuva-II

  • Launched in Jan 2013
  • India's fastest supercomputer with a global rank of 62.
  • The Param Yuva-II is capable of crunching data up to 524 teraflops (A trillion floating point operations per second), about 10 times faster than the Param Yuva-I.
  • Cluster of 35000 servers
  • 2 Types of storage (Home Area for User Data and Scratch Area for Intermediate Processing data)
  • 400 TB of Tape Backup 
  • CDAC Pune have capacity to run the Param Yuva – II super computer for 30 days even without electricity
  • Displayed the difference of Cold Asile and Hot Asile

2)     STPI (Software Technology Parks of India)

Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) is a society set up by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India, with the objective of encouraging, promoting and boosting software exports from India. STPI is statutory body, internet and incubation service provider.

Students had a detailed discussion regarding STPI services with Mr. Sanjay Kumar Gupta, Director, STPI – Maharashtra. He gave information about various activities of STPI as follows

  • Statutory Services

o   STP (Software Technology Park) Scheme : This scheme is launched for setting up software development and IT enabled services firm in India for 100% Export.

o   EHTP (Electronic Hardware Technology Park) Scheme : This scheme is launched for boosting of exporting electronic hardware items which are developed by IT department of india

  • Technology Services

o   Under this they give high speed internet services in various ways. i.e. Leased Line or through Radio Frequency (wireless) mechanism. They also took students to the place (tower) from where they distributed data services through RF way.

  • Incubation Centre

o   Under this, they provide incubation / serviced office space facility in many of its centers for the Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs). STPI sets up entire facility ready for commencing operations by software units from day one.

Apart from above information they took students to their data services centre where their Networking explained students about various devices they are using along with how the operation and maintenance is done in order to provide internet services to various clients. They explained about following device usage.

3)     Leisure Time Visits / Activities

  • Dagdusheth Ganpati Temple : During free time on first day students visited the said temple which is the most visited place of Pune. Daddusheth Temple is dedicated to the Hindu God Ganesh. The temple is popular in Maharashtra and is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year.
  • Adlab Imagica : Adlabs Imagica is an amusement park located on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near by to Pune. It has got around 30 rides in terms of Themed Attractions and Thrill Rides.
  • Lavasa : India’s first planned city. It is private city which is built near by Pune which is based on Italian Town PORTOFINO. Lavasa is a small but very nice place to visit which has got a very long street and several buildings bearing the name of that town.
