The American society of Mechanical engineers (ASME) conducts an event termed as the Human Powered Vehicle challenge (HPVC) internationally, once a year. HPVC encompasses the designing and manufacturing of an automobile, which solemnly works on the power generated via human effort. This year it was hosted by LNMIIT University (Jaipur) at Asia-Pacific level.

The team from Marwadi University was given a surfeit of knowledge by Professor Nirav S. Doshi (Assistant Professor). The participating team consisted of 11 members, out of which there were THREE GIRLS. It was all due to the overwhelming expounding by the faculties of Marwadi University, that even girls took part vivaciously in a Mechanical Engineering Competition.

The target was to design a vehicle that would give the maximum possible output in terms of speed, with minimum effort by the driver. While designing, various points were kept in mind, viz., the ergonomics, aesthetics, stability, comfort and safety of the driver, as well as the designed vehicle itself.

A tricycle was designed, with two wheels in the front-side and one at the back-side. Such a design was made considering the stability of the vehicle along with the driver's comfort. Innovations like Two point adjustable seat system (TPSAS) were comprised in the design, which gave 4.5 inches of seat travel and 35 degree of seat inclination so as to accommodate drivers of different height. Furthermore, Handle adjust-ability system (HAS) was also included, which assisted in providing telescopic steering, through which the length can be adjusted as per the driver's comfort. The prime innovation was aerodynamic fairing, which was accommodated in the front region of the tricycle, for the purpose of diminishing the air drag and achieving better velocity.

Most of the parts and entire assembly of the tricycle was downright done at the workshop of the Marwadi University. All kinds of instruments and machines indispensable for the purpose of designing of the tricycle, such as - CNC, VMC, MIG welding, TIG welding, Lathe, welding, drilling machines, etc., were made available by the Marwadi University. Marwadi university believes that a glut of opportunities should be made available for students to work in teams, so as to design and build highly engineered vehicles. Thus, the complete funding for the entire designing and manufacturing of the tricycle was provided by Marwadi University. The students were given regular guidance and assistance, so that they are able to utilize the academic knowledge, so as to create the technical paradigms.

All due to the profuse corroboration by various faculties, funding from Marwadi University and diligent working of students, Marwadi University attained 7th position in design, 9th position in innovation and overall 15th position in the entire ASIA PACIFIC region. Students gained a lot of practical knowledge, which is utmost in today’s era. Post meeting people from different countries, students learned excessively about lots of new ideas and innovations springing up.

The tricycle was designed and fabricated under the leadership of Prof. Nikunj V. Rachchh (HOD, Mechanical) and Professor Nirav S. Doshi (Assistant Professor). There was incessant support of Shri Jitubhai Chandarana (Vice Chairman, MU), Dr. Y. P. Kosta (Director), Dr. R. B. Jadeja (Dean, FOE), Dr. R. L. Jhala (Dean, FOT), Dr. Sarang Pande (Dean, PG Studies), Prof. Bhavesh K. Kanabar (HOD, Mechanical) and Prof. Ramesh Bhoraniya (HOD, Mechanical).
